Scheduling During the Pandemic
If we’ve learned anything during this pandemic, it’s that we need to be flexible and ready to shift to Plan B, C, D, E… we might get all the way to Z. We’ve shifted our approach to pretty much everything in life — school, work, socializing, how we shop, meal planning and cooking, how we find alone time or keep ourselves sane. Photographers likewise have had to pivot. Big time. When the stay-home orders went in place in March, all sessions came to a screeching halt (including #TheFrontStepsProject). No newborns, no milestones, we had to put it all on hold.
As of May, based on local regulations, my business is still on hold. But I am planning for Phase I reopening. When we enter that stage, here is what we can do:
- Outdoor Newborn Sessions — At your home, in your yard, on a beautiful day. We use your blankets use as a backdrop (on top of some waterproof materials I bring, to keep it dry). You’ll swaddle baby and I’ll help direct the placement. Family photos with your new addition sitting together on a blanket, or standing under beautiful foliage. You get the idea! And then when it’s safe, I can return and take baby’s photos in the nursery, so you have that scene captured, too.
- Outdoor Child & Family Sessions — We’ll resume capturing your desired photos outside! Thank goodness this is happening during mild weather, right?! We will evaluate whether we do these in your yard, or an outdoor location where we can maintain a safe social distance from any other people.
There will be no in-home sessions, including the classic child portrait sessions or in-home newborn sessions, until we reach a later stage of re-opening. Fresh 48 sessions are unavailable indefinitely.
I will ask that you monitor your family’s temperatures and health, and I will do the same for myself and my family. If any changes in health are identified, we will be postpone the session to a later date. I will wear a mask the entire time, and since you of course cannot wear them while being photographed, we will have to maintain a distance of at least six feet. And keeping the flexibility mantra in mind, I will modify my cancellation policy so that should a health or family crisis arise, we can cancel with no fees. We are all vulnerable, and I want you to be able to approach your session relaxed and at ease.
May 20, 2020 update: I have stopped #TheFrontStepsProject photo shoots. While I had hoped to resume when restrictions lifted, it has been 2+ months of postponing clients’ sessions. When I can resume work, I need to prioritize my scheduled clients — both those who have been patiently waiting, and new bookings! I was delighted and so driven by supporting the DC Diaper Bank. But I do need to ensure I can run my business sustainably, and balance that with the reality we’re all facing: our children are home and with no childcare. For those who participated and supported DC Diaper Bank, thank you!!! To those who inquired but we couldn’t do, I so appreciate your interest in doing these photos and I’d be honored to do a baby, child, or family session with you!
Stay safe and healthy, and I cannot wait to start taking your photos again soon. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at email@example.com
Classic Child Portrait Sessions
Portrait sessions are held at my home studio, 30 minutes each, on weekday or Saturday mornings. Please see the investment page for pricing and package details. I do offer packages for siblings.
Newborn & Fresh 48 Sessions
Newborn sessions are booked several months out, so contact me ASAP to schedule.
Newborn sessions are typically on weekdays. I’ll ask you to watch the lighting in your home, and then we’ll pick morning or early afternoon for your session. We will schedule your session for two hours, but I always build in some extra time in case baby is hungry or needs extra soothing.
I schedule newborn sessions based on due date, for when the baby will be 5-10 days old. We’ll select and hold a date, then adjust once baby arrives! I always take into account both baby’s and mother’s health, to ensure your session takes place when everyone is ready.
I also offer “Fresh 48” sessions — a 30-45 minute session in the hospital in the baby’s first 48 hours of life. Again, we’ll hold based on due date, and then adjust when baby arrives.
Child and Family Sessions
Outdoor sessions are held in the early morning or late afternoon / evening. When possible, I try to schedule on weekdays to avoid crowds or onlookers, but I do also offer sessions on weekends.
While early morning may sound less appealing for the grown ups in the family, it is often when kids are most fresh, and let’s face it, aren’t we up anyways with the little ones? Plus, you can plan a family breakfast out afterwards!
If you’re interested in an in-home session, we’ll talk about lighting in your house and find the best time. I also am happy to do a mix of indoor and outdoor at your home!
We’ll schedule one hour for your session, although I try to keep them to 30-45 minutes for your kids. Please see the investment page for pricing and package details.
I’m based in Bethesda / DC and work with clients in the district and surrounding counties of Maryland and Virginia. Session fees cover travel within 20 miles of zip code 20816. Further locations are subject to an additional charge.
