I was delighted when this family asked me to take their family photos — they’d recently moved from out of state and were about purchase and move into a new house. What better way to share the news than through their holiday cards? But it’s not just news. When you buy a house and move your children into it, with the intent to lay down roots and stay there, let your kids grow up there… that house becomes part of your family. The home you’ll all grow up in — the kids literally, as the height tick marks inch up the wall, and you as a parent, spouse, person. That home will become the safe haven that you gather in daily, stay connected as a family, share your values with your children, help them learn everyday life skills and understand who they are. You want them to grow up with fond feelings for the home, a desire to return there.
This family had literally just moved in when I saw them, but they were already settled. Unpacked, and you could tell they felt settled, too. Their son’s soccer balls were scattered around the backyard and he was clearly comfortable running his new terrain. Their sweet daughter — who had just turned 1! — was at ease, which is of course a reflection of her parents emotions and states. Simple and beautiful greenery decorated for the holidays, and the mama had broken the kitchen with cake baking — important when that’s your side biz and passion!
It was simply lovely to meet and spend time with this sweet family, and I’m so happy to welcome them to the neighborhood!
