Summer… the days often feel so long. From getting up early to pack lunches for camp before the kids wake, to multiple rounds of sunscreen, to bathing sticky sweaty kids after hours of play, then trying to keep them from getting sticky and sweaty again before they crawl in bed. I want to max out the days — this window of opportunity while they’re on break from school, when we can play and create and swim and just be (ah, how I wish we could all appreciate sitting still more often!). We fill our days to the brim.
Yet, the weeks are flying by. I felt like I should run a victory lap when we entered our last week of camps this week. All that planning months ago to create a good balance of activities and spend time with various friends; the weekly logistics and camp ‘stuff’ acquisitions, labeling, and packing; the daily time management and chauffeuring. Not to mention the emotional side — sending your oldest off on a bus to a wilderness camp, trusting he’ll turn in his EpiPen when he arrives and not wander off and fall in a creek; or, assuring your anxious five year old that she’ll find new friends at camp.
Meanwhile, while they’ve been playing at camp or creating forts in our basement during the DC heat wave, I’ve been planning for my Fall Mini Sessions!! I’m nervously excited for the busy fall photo season, as I know it will be jam packed but I love doing each and every session (seriously, I love it). I’ve been location planning for my Fall Mini’s, and luckily, my daughters are very willing to help try out new spots.
Rather, my five year old is happy to help and take photos. Especially since she has this new dress that twirls beautifully — she was delighted to be told to pirouette like a ballerina! My two year old is happy to explore and play and be her usual crazy self, which always brings some humor to our photo excursions.
One of our stops was the District of Columbia War Memorial, which is a lovely memorial right on Independence Avenue. It’s beautiful, and since it’s not always flooded with visitors, you can really appreciate it, and enjoy it for photographs 🙂 Here’s a look at my girls playing around on it, a little preview for fall sessions!
