How would you describe your style?
In-home, natural light photography that yields authentic, yet refined and beautiful, images. I love capturing my clients in their comfort zone, recording their feelings, emotions, and interactions with their babies or young children, so they can look back and remember what life was like then.
Where do you shoot?
Newborn sessions happen in your own home. Other sessions also typically take place at your home, but can be at another familiar location of your choice. I strongly encourage at-home sessions—they bring an authenticity that I promise you’ll look back on fondly. For in-home sessions while I want your images to be authentic, I do move clutter that could be distracting in pictures (I take care of moving it, and putting it back!).
When do you hold client sessions?
Newborn sessions I schedule on weekday mornings, typically starting around 10:00, and they last ~3 hours.
For child and family sessions, I schedule outdoor sessions in the early mornings or late afternoons, so we can use the beautiful rising or setting light (and avoid nasty shadows on the subjects’ faces). For indoor ones, we’ll figure out when there is the best light at the desired location. Oh, and we’ll take into account kids’ nap / happy / cranky schedules!
I schedule child and family sessions on weekdays or on select weekends each month, reserving the other weekends for dedicated time with my family.
Do you use props?
Nope, I don’t use props or do newborn beanbag posing. I want to capture your family naturally and true to your everyday. That said, I strive for a mix of candid and posed portrait shots (see next question!). For newborn shoots, I will bring blankets and wraps if you’d like for some simple portrait poses, but I love to use your own.
Do you pose at all?
Yes! Being in front of a camera is inherently different from your family’s everyday. We’ll talk before your session and I’ll brainstorm a ideas for different set ups. I help position you and your fam to make sure we get flattering photographs that take advantage of the light and space. As we get into the session, it becomes easy to relax and simply “be,” which creates such sweet photographs.
What if my kids don’t behave?
I’m a mom to a very active three-year old and six year-old. And a baby who pretty much acts like a puppy. Kids are kids, and my job is to capture them with their true personalities showing. I guide them, yet go with their flow. I’ll work with children on their schedule, whether that means nursings, snack breaks, down time, or run around like crazy time.
How do I get my pictures?
After a session, I will provide a sneak peak of ~3 images over email. The full set of digital images will be completed within 2-3 weeks and sent to you in an online, password-protected gallery. My packages include the full digital sets, and you’ll have the full rights to your pictures. I’ll also give you web-sized, watermarked versions for online use.
What about prints?
You can order prints and other products a la carte through your online gallery. I work with a professional print lab, and you’ll have the full rights for printing all your images.
What’s your gear?
I’m a Nikon gal. My current combo is my Nikon D750 with 24-70mm and 35mm lenses. I always shoot RAW. Coffee is my assistant.
Tell me more about you.
I’m ‘mommy’ to two crazy kids and a beautiful baby girl. My littles challenge me daily, make me pause, make me laugh, and basically rule my world. My husband is my high school sweetheart and my greatest supporter. I love pretty notepads. I’m a constant list-maker, and I find checking things off so satisfying. I frequent local coffee shops and Whole Foods, and have a weakness for frozen yogurt. I’m DC born and raised but a piece of my heart’s in Durham, NC, where we lived for two years. I multi-task too much and drive my husband crazy by always being productive. I’ve been “making pictures in my head,” since I was a kid, and I love that I get to make them for others.
